Run for Newmarket aims to raise $25K for Southlake

Mercy4Mankind Ahmadiyya Muslim Youth Association is hosting the 3rd annual event on Oct. 13 to raise funds needed for equipment and services at local hospital

Put on your best running shoes for the third annual Run for Newmarket on Oct. 13 at Fairy Lake in support of our local hospital.

The Mercy4Mankind Ahmadiyya Muslim Youth Association will host the event to raise crucial funds for vital equipment and services for Southlake Regional Health Centre patients. It has raised more than $15,165 to date toward its goal of $25,000.

“As we get closer to the event, it’s growing more,” said Arif Faheem Khan, organizer. “It’s amazing support from the community.”

About 166 participants have donated and signed up so far, with Khan adding they hope to have 250 people attending the run over the Thanksgiving weekend.

“We are requesting people to sign up before the event, but we do have on-site registration for participants,” said Khan.

The event offers a diverse range of options, including a five-kilometre run, three-kilometre run and one-kilometre family walk. This variety ensures that everyone, regardless of their fitness level, can participate and contribute to this cause, Khan said.

Newcomers to the third annual event have signed up, added, thanks to their booths at the Southlake artisan market on Aug. 9 and Newmarket-Aurora MPP Dawn Gallager Murphy’s community barbecue on Sept. 29.

Competitive and casual runners and walkers are welcome to attend with their families and enjoy the festivities of the day.

The cost to sign up for the five-kilometre walk is $45 and includes a free t-shirt; the price for the three-kilometre walk is $35 and includes a free t-shirt, and the one-kilometre walk is free. A t-shirt is not included in the one-kilometre walk but can be purchased for $15.
